English Vinglish

Man said woman always following her feeling. For me, it's a truth, it's more than an intuition. When I chose to watch this movie, I also followed my feeling. Then, I'm right. English Vinglish is more than an ordinary Hindi movie. It's same as 3 Idiots, My Name is Khan, and Taare Zameen Par.

English Vinglish shared us about three aspects of the importance in learning English. They are money, fame, and knowledge. Those three keywords apparently play a glitter role in how society--included family--judges a personal.

It is a story of a woman who doesn't know English well. She feels insecure both in family and society at large. This movie is light-hearted yet touching. It tells a transformational journey of a comeback actress, Sridevi, acted as Shashi. The circumstances make Shashi put her own self determination. She overcomes the insecurity, masters the language, teaches the world a lesson on how to be a self assured and confident lady.

This film is shot mostly in New York. There is one of a tagline that I love most:
"I will not leave New York without learning English."

It's not only Sashi who captured in the inherent struggle with the English language, but also many people all over the world: Africa, China, France, Mexico, and Pakistan. They come from diverse social and cultural background: baby sitter, barber, businessman, chef, driver, and entrepreneur (Shashi), included gay (the African man and Jo--the English teacher). Here Shashi firstly told by Jo that she is a great entrepreneur. Jo is a patient, calm, kind, and nurtured teacher who tells Shashi that:
"Entrepreneur refers to everyone who runs his/her own business."
The more magical and plus point is Shashi makes Ladu--the sweets of traditional India.

Overall, this film is hillarious, touching, sensitive, and it becomes the mark of the come back of India superstar, Sridevi (Shashi).

Somehow this scene is disgusting, but this French man has pure heart. Shashi's husband learns from him a lot. Source: http://static.ibnlive.in.com/ibnlive/pix/sitepix/10_2012/scenebest.jpg

The best part I love most in this film is whenever the French man helps and respects Shashi through his pure love. Nevertheless, Shashi always recalls herself about her son and daughter even this guy is her first love. So, it's not her husband. Shashi's husband rarely appreciates what Shashi dreams of. He is same as her daughter who is often ashamed in front of her friends about the pure heart and innocence of her mother, Shashi.
Director Gauri Shinde

It written and directed by Gauri Shinde and produced by her husband, R. Balki. She featured on Rediff's list as the 5 Best Directors last year.

Gauri Shinde admits that English isn't her mother tongue. Therefore, English Vinglish is her way to say sorry and thank you to her mother. Shinde's mother also cooks and knows a bit about English like Shashi. However, she is a great chef for Shinde.
